I compared 4 silver linear holos and one tightly scattered silver holo just so my thumb wasn't naked...
Pinky: Nfu-Oh 61 (the new version)
Ring: Make Up Store Greta
Middle: GOSH 549 Holographic
Index: Layla Hologram Effect 01 Mercury Twilight
Thumb: Color Club Worth the Risque
Thanks to Ashley at AshleyIsPolishAddicted for lending me her GOSH Holographic to compare! Wish she didn't want it back!
Showing you different angles and lighting so you can be the judge. I am one of those people who hates "aqua base" so I didn't use any special base but applied to naked nails. Your mileage may vary, but I have never had issues with linear holos needing a special base. I have also never noticed any of the top coats I've used diminishing the holo effect at all. When initially applied, it turns murky but once it dries, it's totally clear and the holo is just as strong. I only use Cult Nails Wicked Fast or Poshe for holos. But all photos are shown here without a top coat.

And the thumb just for kicks. As you can see it's a tightly scattered holo in the same vein as Color Club Wild at Heart or some of the a Englands.

My "best silver linear holo" award goes to: GOSH 549 Holographic.
Second place: Layla Hologram Effect 01 Mercury Twilight
Third Place: Make Up Store Greta
Nfu-Oh 61 is the "new" version which definitely isn't as holo as the old version was. Add to that the gloppy formula and it's definitely a dud in my book. Application is thick, gloppy and horrible in general.
The application on the top three is dead even in my opinion. No issues with any of them and they all applied very smoothly.
If you enjoyed this post, please take a second to "like" it! Thanks!

I now must change my biggest lemming from Nfu Oh #61 to Gosh 549!! Thanks for the compare!
ReplyDeleteOooohh I love this post!!! I guess I better try to get my hands on some GOSH. I love these polishes, and to me as a Holo Hoarder, the linear holo is the holy grail of polish!!!
ReplyDeleteOh and Sheila, I agree about the top and base coat… I do the exact same.
Now we need a wear test! I have had Worth the Risque on for 3 days and it's perfect!!
Great comparison!! I thought I didn't need the GOSH since I have the Layla... maybe I need the GOSH now LOL
ReplyDeleteWell I wish I had the GOSH too, BUT it's discontinued and HTF. This comparison just tells me that the Layla's really hit it out of the park. It looks *almost* as good as the GOSH AND it comes in several colors. I need to order the other 2 colors I didn't get now.
ReplyDeleteLOL! Of course you do! But I agree, the Laylas are a great alternative.

DeleteThe Gosh gets back in the stores this autumn. Just sayin' before you spend heaps of money on eBay or suchlike.
ReplyDeleteGreat comparison, that was very helpful! :)
Thanks - I was looking on line where to even buy Gosh as I never have seen it before except in blogs.
Deletelove this style of post x
ReplyDeleteLove it! I'm so glad you did this comparison! I'm still surprised that the GOSH is so much more holo than the Layla.
ReplyDeleteI have the Color Club and the Jessica Holo ,the others are awesome!
ReplyDeleteIn my personal experience and opinion Make Up Store Aqua Fix makes a huge difference on the holographic effect on at least the Make Up Store holos.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this! I've been wanting to compare, but I don't have all of these. I just wish the Layla's weren't so expensive!
ReplyDeleteI've heard some rumors that they are re-releasing the GOSH holo, but like everything else, I'm wondering if they will have changed the formula. I would love to find a current bottle to compare when the new ones come out. I didn't realize there is a "new" vs. "old" version of Nfu Oh 61. Do you know when there was a change in formulas?
ReplyDeleteI still love my Laylas, and to me they were worth every penny I paid. One thing I did do was lightly buff my nails as they recommended and that actually made a big difference in the holo effect for me. I STILL want China Glaze OMG! lol. Thanks for doing these comparisons! I have the Color Club and Mercury Twilight and I'm thinking I need to find a bottle of GOSH somehow. . . .
Really good comps - thanks. I have no idea the Nfu-Oh #61 formula had changed. I have the old one. Did notice that it was back 'in' again which it has been gone forever. Curious how the old Nfu Oh would match up to the Gosh?
ReplyDeleteYes, I WISH I had the old one to compare. I have a feeling it would have held up better in the comparison. Also wish I'd had China Glaze OMG to compare. But still, kinda makes me happy to see Layla did well.
DeleteI hadn't heard that Nfu Oh changed either, so I am very happy to see this post! I've been wondering about GOSH polish as well, as I have only seen it on blogs and wondered where I could buy it in NY. I'm off to google it!
ReplyDeletethank you so much for this great comparison post. I haven't got any holo polish, now thanks for this post I know I have to grab GOSH or Layla for sure!!
ReplyDeleteGOSH is defiantly the winner! Love it! Wish I had it :)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if China Glaze OMG is close to any of the really holo ones?
ReplyDeleteI also have the Color Club one and mine isn't holo at all!!!
Wow, thanks so much for the comparisons. I've been wanting to get a holo so it's great to actually see some of them in comparison with others :) Some lovely, lovely colors!
