My Thoughts on Marsala, Pantone's Color of the Year 2015 and Zoya Marney

So, by now you've seen Pantone's Color of the Year for 2015. Marsala. Raise your hand if you're NOT a painter and you've heard of this shade before. Anyone? Beuller?

Yeah. I am a painter and I hadn't actually heard of it. If I had, I've forgotten.

The first question I always have when they announce what shade will be be forced upon me for the following year is "who ARE these people at Pantone?"

Well this year, I decided to look it up. Now I didn't actually "research" it, mind you. I merely Wiki'd it. I wasn't really looking for any more in-depth explanation than I was likely to find there anyway.

This is what I found...

Annually Pantone declares a particular color "Color of the Year". Twice a year the company hosts, in a European capital, a secret meeting of representatives from various nations' color standards groups. After two days of presentations and debate, they choose a color for the following year; for example, the color for summer 2013 was chosen in London in the spring of 2012.[15] The color purportedly connects with the zeitgeist; for example the press release declaring Honeysuckle the color of 2011 said "In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues."[16] The results of the meeting are published in Pantone View ($750), which fashion designers, florists, and many other consumer-oriented companies purchase to help guide their designs and planning for future products.[15]

In 2012, the color of the year, Tangerine Tango, was used to create a makeup line, in partnership with Sephora.[20] The product line, named Sephora + Pantone Universe collection, features Tangerine Tango–embellished false lashes; nail lacquers, cream, glitters, and high-pigment lip glosses.[21]

As you can see, the text isn't really up-to-date, but you get the idea. Okay, so I really didn't know that they had a secret meeting of representatives from various nations' color standards groups. I'll admit, I was picturing some lone "Ugly Betty" behind a computer screen laughing maniacally at the fact that she could decide what every company in the entire world would inundate the buying public with every year. I'm actually pleasantly surprised it's not that way. Exactly.

However, I am a redhead. I am stubborn. I have a mind of my own. I know my tastes. And by now, I know what looks good on me and what doesn't. So basically all the announcement of Pantone's Color of the Year tells me each year is whether I'll be spending money or not.

When jeans started giving everyone over the age of 18 and over 100 pounds a muffin top and produced an entire generation of people who don't actually know where their actual waist is, I decided right then that no one was going to tell me what to wear. What to buy. When designers went through a phase where their main goal seemed to be dressing everyone in the way that made their bodies look the worst they possibly could, I stopped being influenced at all by them. I mean what is the point of TRYING to make people look bad? They could have taken Raquel Welch and made her look deformed. But I digress.

Color!

I didn't think too much about Pantone's choice for 2014 because I'd been trying forever to get anyone to make ANYTHING in that color. So I had a good year. I was thrilled. My wallet? Not so much. Clothes, purses, nail polish, home decor. Pig in slop I tell ya!

After Radiant Orchid, I knew I would be disappointed in anything unless they broke tradition and declared it 2015's Color of the Year as well.

But so far, most of what I've seen hasn't been positive. It's about like my reaction when they pulled out EMERALD for 2013. You'd think being a redhead, that would be a great shade on me. It's not. Especially most of the so-called emerald shades they tried to force on us. Nope. And I thought I was just going to have to hibernate for the entirety of 2009. Yellow? Yeah, ain't happening for me.

But actually, marsala is not a bad shade. It's not a POP or even a great accent shade, but more of a base. A staple. Something to build around. And it's not offensive to my senses. So I'm okay with it. It will at the very least be a shade that everyone can wear, if they're so inclined.

But it doesn't look bad to me at all. Some of the shades we will have to contend with though will probably remind us of the 80s. I've already seen a few lipsticks like that. For me it's going to be about getting the right shade/saturation to make it work for me.

For example, I just put on Zoya Marney and realized I already have quite a bit of that shade. It could easily, with a bit less pigment or a little more pinky/mauve tones, turn into the 80s shade I am SO over. But it's perfectly saturated and it not only goes well with my skin tone, but I can see it going great with a warmer skin tone as well.

So if you want to get a head start on Marsala, grab a bottle of Zoya Marney. Wear it when you're shopping! Get a jump on them!

I do have more polish in the "marsala family" that I'll pull out to show you soon.

So what do YOU think? Do you let Pantone's Color of the Year dictate your choices? Is this a shade you will embrace or avoid.

  1. Great post! Marsala is not a shade I would ever pick for just about anything in clothing or home wares, but it is very flattering for a lot of skin tones in lipsticks, blushes, and even nail polish. Of the google image search of the color marsala, I love the burgundy-leaning versions, but am not keen on the grayer-mauver takes on it. But it was a very popular color in the 1930s so it immediately looked vintage to me.

  2. Depends on the shade of it for me
The muddy shades are depressing and I would avoid it The clear burgundy leaning is better on my skin tone I won't be redecorating in this colour in my house or buying clothes in this colour I stick with what works best for me regardless of what Pantone or anyone says is the "it" colour of the day, season or year

  3. It doesn't sing to me. Not into the Marsala thing...unless it's the sauce ;)

  4. I disagree with the disagree-ers, lol. I think this is a fabulous color; I like it soooooo much better than emerald (least fave color ever) or tangerine the year before. It's not bright nor super bold, so I get that. But, gah, it's such a beautiful, classic color. Not quite brown, not quite red, a bit more interesting than that, but still very classic and lovely. My fave pair of cords are in this color. I have many nail polishes in this color. Blushes and eye-shadows? Forget about it, super lovely. And sheer lip glosses in this shade? Sign me right up. I feel like it's so much more wearable and versatile than previous shades. Perhaps not the most exciting color ever to be pantoned, but it might be my fave of recent years.

  5. I like this color! It won't become my favorite or anything but it is really pretty.

  6. It's not something I'm going to wear a ton of, but I do think it's an interesting choice, and a good sort of basic color. Plus I think it's going to be interesting to see what people do with it for spring.

I wasn't aware of Zoya Marney, but one color I have noticed appears to be in that general range of colors, in pictures at least, is OPI I Knead Sourdough. I have a bottle so I need to try it out again and see what it looks like in person!

  7. I'm not a trend follower and I wear what I like. I worked as a graphic artist previously and can tell you Pantone makes a lot of money selling their colors to printers and designers. So I guess that makes me rebel even more! I don't like or hate this color. It's just "meh" to me.

  8. I knew Marsala is a sort of wine (used for classic Tiramisu) but it never occured to me it is a name of a color. Well... not a very intriguing color for me. I wish I was into nail polish in 2010, this is totally my hue! I have a bottle of Chanel Nouvelle Vague issued that year and I love it dearly.

  9. Most of the past colours have been great but Marsala does nothing for me. Eugh!

  10. I have a couple of bottles of polish in this shade range, and they look horrible on me. I can't imagine putting this color on my face, I'll be passing on this year's offerings.

  11. Well, I happen to have the pale neutral warm skin tone to wear "Marsala" and have a number of vintage Chanel polishes in that range to prove it (not to mention lippies.) Not sure whether I really need a lot more although the Zoya is lovely on you and tempts me. That being said, the reason you as a painter have never heard of the color is because the marketing folks in the back room took the name from the wine to make their promotion of the color which truly should be named "wine" more ahem, palatable. To me, this shows that all of this is more directed towards increasing makeup sales. Because I would guess they learned their lesson that yellow and emerald (which may be fine for the wall or sofa) are low use in makeup-- and radiant orchid was a boost to sales in the beauty industry. Happening to like both radiant orchid and marsala, it's nice to see a lot of beauty options in the given year. But what I don't like about this whole "This is your color" sales stuff is what happens in the next year. Is orchid now over? Will wearing it make us looked "dated?" What will happen when the marketers have appropriated and used up all the colors?

  12. I love that Zoya on you! I am a huge fan of this shade, and I cannot wait to start buying stuff in this color. LOL!

  13. I really love this color, always have. Some might say dated, but I agree with The Polished Hippy, it looks vintage to me. Most of my fall clothes are already this color and I have a purse this color as well. As far as nail polish, I already have a few in this family, like, OPI I Knead Sourdough, Chanel Accessoire, Revlon Raisin Rage. I need to see if I have Zoya Marney, cuz I love it! It is a great neutral that looks great on me in any form of clothing, make-up or nail polish!

  14. My initial reaction was BLAAAAH BORING! But now that I've had some time to adjust, I'm loving it! :)

  15. I honestly just purchased this shade from Zoya because I thought it matched best to Marsala, I'm excited about this shade. I actually like it as a nail polish and lip color very much!

  16. I'm a redhead as well and LOVED Radiant Orchid! Emerald was a highlight too. Just like you though, I couldn't find nearly enough well-fitting clothes in that gorgeous shade of purple last year, nor did the emerald trend mean much for my wardrobe. I'm pretty excited about Marsala this year, because it's a muted color and I like those, and because unlike all the pastel pinks this color might actually compliment my pale skin and freckles. I know I'll be on the lookout!

I'm happy that Pinterest just suggested this post for my nail polish board. I like the way you write! I could almost tell you were a redhead even before I had read it, haha.
